Djibouti's youth football Championship, one of the country's newest competitions is now over, with Cite Stade team winning the final match played here at the National technical centre on Monday afternoon.

The hotly-contested match ended in 2-2 draw in the 90-minute period that it takes to play a football game followed by a 30-minute extra time which also saw neither of the two teams score a goal and as a result, the Cite Stade boys were lucky to win 5-4 in penalties.

The youth football tourney has gathered over 600 young boys between the ages of 14-16 who represented 26 teams from different neighbourhoods in the capital Djibouti and surrounding villages.

The FDF president Souleiman Hassan Waberi who addressed at the conclusion ceremony of the four weeks-long competition said that the organization of the tournament was part of his federation’s policy to rebuild the country’s junior national team.

"Such competition will be held annually, because we want to have a stronger youth national team either U 17 or U-20 and I am sure that with the continuation of the annual youth tournament Djibouti will be able to score victory in the near future football competitions” president Souleiman Hassan Waberi noted during his address at the conclusion ceremony on Monday.

He said that his federation was committed to giving more priority to the youth competitions, as football needs a build up from the bottom.

Since he was elected as the FDF president on 10th of November 2012, president Souleiman and his committee succeeded to create more competitions including: the annual youth league, the women’s football league and as well as the beach soccer tournament which Djiboutian have never played before.
