The most populous funeral ceremony to be witnessed in recent years has been held in Mogadishu on Tuesday Morning for the late International Somali-sports veteran Farah Wehlie Addo.

Tens of thousands of people including sporting dignitaries, fans, government officials and clerics have participated in the funeral prayers of former president of CECAFA, Somali National Olympic committee and Somali football federation, the late Farah Wehlie Addo, which was held at the Stadium Banadir in Mogadishu early on Tuesday morning.

Farah Addo who formerly headed Somali Olympic committee, Somali football federation and east-central African Football association died in Cairo last week and was brought in Mogadishu late on Monday.

Somalia’s’ most respected and the most-well known cleric Sheik Moalim Nur Mohamed Siyad was leading tens of religious men who preached the crowd before saying the funeral prayers.

“We have lost a great man and survivor of Somali sport” said Mogadishu’s new mayor Mohamed Osman Ali Dhagahtur who spoke at the funeral of Farah Addo.

President of Somali football federation who talked to the press during the funeral service Mr. Said Mahmoud Nur called for all Somalis to observe for 30 days of mourning to remember the man who lent a forceful voice in Somali and African football.

“Somalia has missed a great father whose remembrance will always rest in our minds” Somali football federation General secretary Abdi Qani Said Arab who is currently in Puntland for the nation’s 18th regional football tournament said in his via phone address at the funeral ceremony.

Although he was not holding any post in Somali sport before his passing away, most of Somali people believe that with the death of Farah Addo the back bone of Somali sport was broken.

“His commitment of our sport and the Olympic movement made him a key figure in both our organizations, while his contribution to African Refereeing and the numerous FIFA committees of which he was a member will go down in the annals of football history” the president of the world’s football governing body FIFA Joseph S. Blatter said in his recent condolence message to CAF and Somali football federation.
